How to sell your own Stock Photos
I've been into photography ever since I was little. My Mother has always really been into it and I guess I just inherited some of her skills over the years. Now days, seems like I take and use my photos all the time. It was only a few years ago that I stumbled on to this stock photography business and now I can't get enough of it.

I love shooting photos so it doesn't feel like work! Anyway, a few things to get you started if you are a photographer interested in doing the same.

Start your own stock photo site
Why give 80% or more of your revenue to those stock photo sites? Well for one, it is VERY difficult to compete with these large stock photo sites. They have millions of photos, thousands and thousands of users...enough to just dominate the search engines. But don't give in to the thought of having your own stock photo website. My thought on this....exposure and well planned SEO. Do your homework. Study search engine results for certain types of images. Find your niche! Look for something that isn't well covered and build a site that fills that gap. But where do you start? Sure there are all kinds of things you need to consider when building your own website. Over the years, I've had all kinds of experience with good and bad hosting companies, open source scripts and custom website design. Please feel free to contact me if you are really interested in doing something with your own site. I'd be glad to help. Already know you are ready for your own site? First step, check out Hostmonster for hosting services! They really are good and at a reasonable price. Second step, well if you know how to startup your own website and build it....go for it. If not, contact me for help building your own site!

Sell your photos on other sites
Along with uploading to your own website, you need to start uploading your photos to as many stock photo sites as you can. A few recommended stock photos sites include:

FOTOLIA
Whether you are selling or buying stock photos, Fotolia is a great site for international photo sales. Fotolia offers great exposure throughout the world with websites in Espana, France, UK and in Deutschland.

iStockphoto
This has been a great site to use that really keeps up with cool admin tools and overall site technology. Yes there is a TON of competition, but once you get a few photos ranked high in the search results, you can cross promote your work with ease. Downside of istockphoto is the amount of work it takes to choose categories for your photos!
Check out iStockphoto here.

Shutterstock
Another one of my favorite stock photos sites is Shutterstock. This is more of a subscription based photo site that does well if and when you keep new photos uploaded on a consistent basis.
Try Shutterstock here.

Big Stock Photo
Good selection of photos at a reasonable price. Easy upload tools (much easier to choose your photo categories than istockphoto)
Big Stock Photo.

Dreamstime
Cool photo contributor management tools as well as some great resources for photographers. AND easy photo categories drop downs.
Get on Dreamstime here.
